Disadvantages of drinking water while standing

While drinking water is essential to living, drinking it in the correct posture leads to healthy living. When it comes to drinking water while standing, science explains why it is harmful and how it affects our body.

We all normally drink water or any beverages while in standing position. Few of us know that drinking water in standing position has many disadvantages. We do exercise daily to keep our body fit and healthy but think for a second if we knew that the drink we are taking is causing problems and diseases in our body just because we are in standing position. How ridiculous is that isn’t it…

It is not just about drinking 8 glasses of water a day to stay healthy and hydrated. It matters in what position you have the water. Do you sit and drink water, or normally have it in passing, while standing?

When you drink your water from a bottle or a glass sitting down, the nutrients reach the brain and boost its activity. It also aids better digestion this way and ensures that you don’t feel bloated after having water.

So we should take it serious now scientist have proved this. So why should not we take it serious. I have listed some disadvantages that are as follows:

When you are standing, your body and tissues are in a state of tension. This leads the water to rapidly flow down your body, causing a disruption in the existing balance of fluids.

Disadvantages of drinking water while standing

1. It Can Cause Arthritis

When you drink water standing, the flow of water gushes down rapidly through your body only to get accumulated in your joints.

2. Splash of Water on Stomach Walls

When you are standing and drinking water, the water flows down and splashes on the stomach walls. In the long run the shock from the rushing water can cause damage to the digestive system. It can also harm your stomach wall and gastrointestinal tract.

3. Your Thirst Does Not Get Quenched

Even if you drink a full glass of water, in the correct posture it will do little to quench your thirst. It is advisable to sit and take small sips of water to quench your thirst truly.

4. Causes Bone Degeneration and Weakness

Due to the wrong posture, while consuming water, your body may experience bone degeneration and weakness.

5. Standing and Drinking Water Triggers Wrong Responses to Your Nervous System

As standing causes a lot of tension in the body and the muscles, your nervous system goes into attention mode, making your body feel out of sync with nature.

6. Does Not Help in Diluting the Acid Levels Present in the Body

Sitting down and taking small sips of water helps in maintaining the acid levels of the body.

7. Cause Ulcer and Heartburn

Drinking water by standing causes ulcers and heartburn
When you drink water in a standing position it ends up splashing the lower half of the oesophagus very hard. This in return can disturb the sphincter, which is the joint between the stomach and oesophagus, and as a result, the oesophagus experiences burning sensation because of the acids in the stomach flowing backwards.

8. Doesn’t dilute the acid level in the body

Drinking water in standing position doesn’t dilute the acid levels in the body
Even Ayurveda mentions it that water must be consumed in slow, small swigs while sitting down. This helps to properly dilute the acid levels in the body by getting combined with the necessary proportion of water.

9. Activate the fight and flight system

Your nerves are tense when you drink water standing
When you drink water standing, a ‘fight and flight system’ is activated which causes nerve tension in the body. But when you sit down and sip water, a parasympathetic system also referred to as the ‘rest and digest system’ comes into the fray, this one helps to calm your senses and ease the process of digestion.

We all are aware of the benefits of exercise and we all notice that exercise not only shapes our body, but it also makes us feel happy and relax. 4. Brown rice 🍚
  5. Spinach juice 🥤

Consuming fruits like bananas, berries, dates, and grapefruit is a great way to replenish after a sweaty workout. They are loaded with vitamins, folate, antioxidants, and macronutrients such as iron, calcium, and potassium. Moreover, natural sugar or fructose present in fruit provides energy.

Best time to eat before workout

I also want to add a little about best time to eat before workout
Marcellus recommends having a small carbohydrate-focused snack within the hour before your workout — but try not to eat anything 15 minutes before you begin exercising, in order to give your body a bit of time to digest.

Proper hydration leading up to your workout is also key. “When you become slightly dehydrated from sweating, you can lose strength, focus, and cramp up,” Gyimah says. “It’s important to go into your workout well-hydrated.”

You should sip water throughout the day and before your workout, but don’t drink a lot right before — that might leave you feeling bogged down and bloated. Marcellus recommends drinking an 8-ounce glass of water within 30 minutes of the start of your workout.

Why it is important to eat before a workout

Although there has been some hype around fasted workouts (exercising on an empty stomach, usually in the morning), most experts agree that having a snack before working out is beneficial.

Takeaways

It’s ok to experiment to see what pre-workout eating routines work best for you, Marcellus says. Some people even enjoy doing fasted workouts, although research is mixed about whether this actually improves fat-burning.

Ultimately, whatever eating habits will give you the energy to perform your best are a good choice. “This is a very individual subject and each person needs to test themself and see how their body feels best,”
